General Preparation Common for all Contrast CT studies (Except for whole abdomen, lower abdomen and virtual Colonoscopy):

1.              Four (4) hours NPO (fasting) post midnight.

2.              Bring creatinine result.

3.              Bring previous film (if applicable)

4.              Report on appointed time.

 

Preparation for CT scan of the Whole Abdomen:

1.              Dilute the oral contrast to one (1) liter of any liquid to be taken twelve (12) hours prior to the procedure.

2.              In one liter only ¾ oral contrasts will be taken the night before the CT scan, ¾ consumed before twelve (12) midnight. Bring the remaining ¼ on the appointed time.

3.              NPO (fasting) post midnight.

4.              Bring creatinine result.

5.              Bring previous CT scan film (if applicable).

6.              No breakfast (morning schedule).

7.              No breakfast and lunch (afternoon schedule).

8.              Report on appointed time.

 

Preparation for CT scan of Lower Abdomen:

1.              Dilute the oral contrast to one liter of any liquid to be taken twelve (12) hours prior to the procedure.

2.              Drink all [one (1) liter]. Consume before twelve (12) midnight.

3.              NPO (fasting) post midnight.

4.              Bring creatinine result.

5.              Bring previous CT scan film (if applicable)

6.              No breakfast (morning schedule)

7.              No breakfast and lunch (afternoon schedule)

8.              Report on appointed time.

 

Preparation for Virtual Colonoscopy:

1.              Forty-eight (48) hours clear liquids.

2.              Give Phosphosoda the day before the examination following the procedure as stated below (Note: Phosphosoda should not be taken by children under 12 years of age).

2.1               For the first dose – 45 ml. of Phosphosoda is diluted with half glass (125 ml) of cold water (or ginger ale, lemon/lime soft drinks, apple juice to remove the taste). This is taken at 7 AM on the day before the procedure, followed by one full glass of clear liquid.

2.2               At mid- day, at least three (3) more full glasses (3 x 250 ml) of clear liquid or more, if desired are taken.

2.3               The second dose – another 45 ml of Phosphosoda is diluted with half a glass (125 ml) of cold water (ginger ale, lemon/lime soft drinks, apple juice as desired).  This is taken at 7 PM of the same day and followed by at least four glasses of clear liquid.

3.              Fleet enema in AM (4 hours prior to the procedure).

 

Note:    “Clear liquids” include: strained fruit juice without pulp (apple, white grape, orange), water, clear broth, coffee, or tea (without milk or non – diary creamer) and any of the following that are not colored red or purple: carbonated soft drinks, full flavored cordials, and clear ice blocks.

Preparation for Barium Enema:

1.              Light evening meal the night before the examination.

2.              No fruits and vegetables

3.              Take one bottle 45 ml Phosphosoda with half glass of Sprite / 7 up or cold water. Follow with three (3) glasses of water in 20-30 minute intervals per glass.

4.              NPO (fasting) after midnight.

5.              Omit breakfast

6.              No smoking

7.              Insert one bottle Fleet Enema 133 ml in the morning

8.              Report for the examination.

Preparation for Plain KUB and Intravenous Urogram:

1.              Light evening meal the night before the examination

2.              No fruits and vegetables.

3.              Take one bottle 45 ml Phosphosoda with half glass of sprtie/7 up or cold water. Follow with three glasses of water in 20-30 minute intervals per glass.

4.              NPO (fasting) after midnight.

5.              Omit breakfast

6.              No smoking.

7.              Report for the examination.

Preparation for Esophagogram (Barium Swallow), Upper GI Series, Small Intestinal Series and T-tube cholangiogram

1.              NPO (fasting) 4 hours prior to the procedure.

Preparation for Ultrasound of the Gallbladder, Pancreas, Hepatobiliary Tree, Aorta, Whole Abdomen and Upper Abdomen:

2.              Take two (2) Disflatyl tablets after supper.

3.              Nothing by mouth after midnight. No smoking.

4.              Take two (2) Disflatyl tablets one hour prior to the procedure. Omit breakfast (If patient still has a laboratory procedure requiring fasting, instruct the patient to go ahead with the laboratory procedure first before taking the last two Disflatly tablets).

Preparation for Transrectal Ultrasound of the Pelvis and Prostate:

1.              Fleet enema four (4) hours before the examination.

Preparation for Ultrasound of the Pelvis, Lower Abdomen, Urinary Bladder, Prostate (transabdominal)
