HISTORY

At the start of operation of the hospital in 1956, Resident trainee doctors walked as general practitioners. In 1973 loose departmentalization based on trainee’s personal preference was started. However, there was no formal residency to guide them pursue sub specialization programs. Their training was sort of a preceptorship style wherein they get instructions, lectures and handed down experiential tips from favorite mentors in each department.

In 1977, Dr. Ambrosio F. Tangco, assumed the responsibility of spearheading a move to put into order the formal training of the Resident Trainees. Some of the consultants who had the same pioneering perception and motivation with Dr. Tangco agreed to form a Graduate Residency Training Program. These were Dr. Alfredo Ramirez, Dr. Amadeo Lustre, Dr. Santiago Guzman, and Dr. Hawthorne Banez. The Program aimed at giving directions to a post – graduate educational advancement program and training of the Resident Trainee to handle patients of their own. With the commendable performance of the trainees, Subspecialty programs were developed.  Dr. Peregrino Ceniza Lao became the first graduate Resident of Manila Doctors Hospital to pass the Specialty Board and accredited as Diplomate by the Philippine Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Such feat was like a proverbial feather in the cap.  This phenomenal success leads further to the development of the different subspecialty fields in the Hospital.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has its beginnings together with the hospital on August 15, 1956.  It was chaired by MDH Founder, Dr. Constantino P. Manahan.  The residency training program was accredited since 1984.  Since then, it has received various recognition from the different arms and continued its expansion through the years.  It started from a small niche at the Fourth Floor, together with the Surgical Department, to a dependent area at the Third Floor occupying the former 3A station.  This houses 6 labor rooms with shared comfort rooms, 2 delivery rooms for minor procedures and vaginal deliveries, 2 operating rooms for major gynecologic and obstetric procedures, Conference room, Lounge, 5 quarters or call room for doctors, nurses, and aides.

This humble beginnings was chaired by the ever – energetic and enthusiastic, Dr. Nora Ignacio – Silao.

The structured residency training of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Manila Doctors Hospital, under the chairmanship of Dr. Silao, started in 1986 when the program was accredited by the POGS. It started with one resident per year level and has gradually increased to the average of 3-4 residents per year level.  The Graduates:
