The Department of Internal Medicine Residency Training began in 1977 spearheaded by the Chairmanship of Dr. Gonzalo Austria who was also the first president of the Philippine College of Physicians.  He was followed by the leadership of Dr. Fernando Piedad, Dr. Dante Morales, Dr. Venancio Gloria and Dr. Nelson Abelardo.  The current chairperson is Dr. Cecilia Montalban who began chairmanship in 2004.

Residency training was first recognized by the Philippine College of Physicians in 1979.  Accreditation was withdrawn in 1983 for unclear reasons and re-accreditation granted in May 1985.  The Department of Internal Medicine residency training was recently granted 3 years full accreditation from January 2004 to December 2006.

The office of the Department is situated at the 12^th floor of the hospital building.  Here, the residents convene for their endorsement, meetings and mini-conferences.  It also contains updated medical journals and subspecialty books for staff use, and serves as repository for the case reports and researches the residents have completed over the past years.  Computers and internet access is likewise available for staff use.

Research is one of the major thrust of the training program.  Research papers had done include case reports, meta-analysis, research protocols and completed retrospective and prospective analytical research papers.  The scientific papers of the residents have consistently won awards in the annual research forum of the hospital.  Some have also gained the distinction of winning in inter-hospital research competitions and some have been presented in national conventions. 

As part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of the department, the department caters to the medical needs of indigent adult patients by holding outpatient clinics, admitting social service cases and clearing adult patients for in house missions for surgery.  It likewise actively participates in out of the hospital missions when called upon.

The Department of Internal Medicine takes pride in the quality of graduates it has produced over the past several years.  Many have gone on to pursue further fellowship training in the various subspecialties of Internal Medicine and have become certified diplomats of the Philippine College of Physicians and the other subspecialty societies.  Many are in private practice rendering quality service here at Manila Doctors Hospital as well as other hospitals in Metro Manila and also in distant provinces.
