HISTORY

The Department of Surgery was one of the first major services that was established together with the Manila Doctors Hospital in 1956. The Firs Chairman, Dr. Januario Estrada Sr.together with Drs. Ambriosio Tangco (General Surgery/ Orthopedics),Romeo Gustilo (Neurosurgey), Luis Torres (Urology), Enrique Garcia (Thoraco Cadiovascular) and Porfirio Recio (Colorectal) were the pioneer surgeons of the Department. Dr. Ambrosio Tangco, Alfredo Ramirez, Romeo Guitrrez, Faustino Domingo jr. and Armand Crisostomo followed as Chairmen who laid the groundwork on which the present department functions under the leadership of Dr. Nelson Cabaluna.

Inially, young general surgeons were employed as House Staff to help in the care of surgical patients. It was in 1978 when a formal training program was put into place with Dr. Dominador Chan as its first resident to date, the department has produced 33 well trained general Surgeons, Some of whom have gone on to finish fellowship training locally and abroad.

With its humble beginnings, the department noww boast a very diverse and competent consultant staff comprising the different subspecialties which includes Nurrosurgery, Pediatric Surgey, Plastic Surgery, Urology, and Thoraco-Cardiocvascular Surgery.

The resident staff now is comprised by 10 doctors in training.

SERVICE DESCRIPTION

Urology

o      Handles cases on genitourinary diseases both for adults and pediatric patients as wells as for male and

females.

Pediatrics

o      Handles surgical cases afflicting the pediatric age group congenital and acquired.

Neurosurgery

o      Handles affliction of brain, spine, and nerves needing surgical intervention.

Thoracic and Cardiovascular

o      Handles cases of congenital or acquired disease of heart, lungs, and blood vessels needing surgical intervention

Plastic

o      Handles surgical cases needing reconstruction or augmentation to achieve acceptable functional/ aesthetic results.
