HISTORY

Pain Management existed long before our forefather’s institutionalized medicine. The use of the poppy plant as a cure all in pain remedies of the ancient civilizations may be the root of the start of Algology or Pain Management. The field of Pain Medicine started when a group of specialists gathered together to address the common ailment that at least 80% of our patients complain of. It was over 40 years ago when this group met to start this branch of the medical specialty and this has grown to be a multidisciplinary field of anesthesiologists, neurologists, surgeons, physiatrists, psychiatrists and psychologists, nurses and several other allied medical professionals.

At the Manila Doctors Hospital, the field has been developed by Dr. Ramon Pesigan, then chairman of the Dept of Anesthesiology. It was formally inaugurated as a center in 2006 December under the chairman of Anesthesiology Dr. Herminia Isaac-Messina. Presently, it is a unit under the medical directorate and is headed by Dr. Ma. Lourdes Josefina K. Cabaluna.
