What are dental implants?

Dental implant is an artificial titanium fixture, which is placed surgically into the jawbone as substitute for missing tooth and its root.

How is it done?

It is a simple surgical procedure wherein the titanium fixture is inserted into the prepared site in the bone under local or general anesthesia. This procedure involves precise preparation in the jawbone with special instruments. This will only take 20 minutes. Dental implants are made of titanium medical alloy. These metals are inert and biocompatible with the tissues of the body.

Can anyone receive dental implants?

Almost everyone can receive dental implants. A patient with medical problems can be worked up for this condition to stabilize, so that he should be ok for implant placement. It is always best to consult a dental surgeon for dental evaluation for he knows how to overcome medical problems that may interfere with bone healing in implant placement.

Can dental implants have caries and tartar build up too like natural teeth?

No caries can develop since they are made up of metal, but plaque that develops into tartar is likely to adhere to the neck portion of the implants if proper oral hygiene maintenance is neglected.
